We got the tits and the poker – You bring the beer

A no limit bluffing strategy

You raise preflop 3-4 times the blind and you get one caller in late position. You have pocket kings and the flop is say A-4-7 rainbow, you fire out a large bet and to your horror you get a call. The turn comes (blank) and you’ve put a lot of chips in the pot. What do you do, do you fire off another bet or do you just check.

There are a couple problems and some light at the end of the tunnel here. If you check here, and the caller has an ace/rag your about 99.9% giving your chips away. (We should assume the opponent has ace rag or worse here as he/she did not repop your preflop raise.) Checking the turn will most certainly show weakness and you will probably need to call a mid sized bet on the river to see whats up. But, if you fire out another big bet on the turn, this may discourage the ace rag to call and lay down the best hand. A good no-limit poker player can and will lay down ace rag even when there is an ace on the flop, knowing that many players are raising with ace / king, ace / queen, ace / jack.

Knowing the player as always, is the most important thing first and foremost. If you can read a player and or learn what kind of hands that player is going to call on a preflop raise, can make your poker days much easier.

Just remember, in no limit poker bluffing is just as important as any other aspect of winning poker. Don’t concede the hand if you don’t have to.
